Positioned atop a hill in a quaint Wisconsin village, the Modern European Residence is surrounded by engaging softscape and mature trees on a 3.5-acre site. The serpentine drive and garden walls create a calming approach that provides an answer to the site’s increasing elevation, and a transition from the public street to the private residence. The low auto court walls are balanced and transected by the granite cobble circle drive, which activates the entry sequence and introduces the use of pattern seen throughout the home. Inspired by old-world European masonry farmhouses, the formal house has a modern approach borne from clean lines. The simplicity of architectural shapes steers focus to the beautifully aligned details revealed in the high-quality materials of white-fired brick, granite, cut stone, simulated slate, and zinc. The overall design massing is understated utilizing a steep roof, dormers, and roof edges that descend to a single-level height, minimizing the second floor. The modern design theming is rooted in the historical detail of the relaxed European style yet modernized for today’s lifestyle. A brighter look is achieved through a neutral color palette to accentuate the contemporary accents that deliver the desired, comfortable elegance in a formal home.
