Mod Remodel

Avid lovers of the north woods, our clients were thrilled to find a small island property in northern Wisconsin. Its unique topography features a wooded hill with lake views, inspiring a design that nestles the home into old-growth spruce and fir. A thoughtful form and dark palette of cedar, stone, and zinc allows the structure to blend quietly into the landscape.
Set along the island’s ridge, the home captures expansive views of the “chain of lakes” and southern light, while also overlooking a northern beach. Dense tree cover conceals it from boaters below.
Three simple gabled forms reduce the home’s scale and create a recessive quality; the central Living Hall, the Entry block, and the Owner’s Suite are linked by two modest connectors and arranged around a north-facing terrace. Bedrooms tuck into the roof, which is articulated with crisp dormers.
The glass-filled Living Hall sits at the heart of the house, connecting kitchen, dining, and living spaces with shared views that draw the eye through the interior and out to the forest.
Reflecting the Owners’ Finnish heritage, the gabled forms and high set windows recall Scandinavian vernacular, allowing the low light of northern winters to bounce deep into the interior.
