Club James Entertainment Terrace
Club James is an exceptional architectural ensemble adjoining the iconic Sheats-Goldstein Residence by John Lautner, FAIA. Originally built for the Sheats family in the early 1960s, the residence was purchased by James Goldstein in 1972, who collaborated closely with Lautner for over two decades to continually refine and “perfect” the home. At the time of Lautner’s passing in 1994, preliminary designs existed for additional site improvements—including a tennis court, guest house, and service quarters. Lautner protégé Duncan Nicholson subsequently carried the work forward, realizing key elements such as the James Turrell Skyspace, Above Horizon. As the program expanded, new spaces were envisioned: a theater, private nightclub, library, offices, dining terrace, and lap pool. Following Nicholson’s passing in 2015, architects Kristopher Conner and James Perry—who had worked closely with Nicholson—founded Conner & Perry Architects, now serving as architect of record for the estate. Their ongoing collaboration with the client has culminated in the recently completed entertainment terrace: a sculptural extension of the nightclub into the landscape, featuring a full kitchen, bar, dining areas, lounges, outdoor restroom, and a 90-foot cantilevered infinity pool. The design evolves Lautner’s legacy of expressive geometry, dynamic structures, minimal materials, and seamless integration with the lush, tropical surroundings.
