Yu & Associates Collaborative
The accessory dwelling unit (ADU) is a recently revived building typology in Chicago that creates housing variety for a range of resident needs and promotes affordable and equitable living. Granny flats, mother-in-law units, coach houses, laneway houses – whatever their name – backyard ADUs are gaining ground in cities around the country. Since the initiative launched and the pilot program was approved in 2021, only a handful have been constructed. Our studio had the opportunity to design and complete one of them, and we took full advantage and presented a beautiful backyard standout.
While maintaining the contextual rear façade on the alley side, we wanted this ADU to be more than just your typical granny’s flat. We played with the building geometry and roof slope to maximize the interior livable space. Even with its limited 720 SF footprint above a two-car garage, our design team was able to fit a complete unit, including an open-concept living with a full-sized kitchen island. The exterior fiber cement panels give a soft, calming texture while glowing under the moonlight. The simplicity of the massing was accentuated through our creative use of linear exterior panels, which also echoes the urban jewel box design concept.
